A reading time calculator estimates how long a piece takes to read by dividing the word count by an average reading speed of about 200 words per minute. Humanit’s free tool shows both reading and speaking time live as you type, so you can size a blog post, script, or speech in seconds.

How it works

  1. 1
Paste your text. Type or paste your text into the reading time calculator above.
  2. 2
See results instantly. The numbers update live as you type — there’s no button to press.
  3. 3
Edit and re-check. Tweak your text and watch the results change in real time.

How reading time is calculated

The estimate divides your word count by an average adult reading speed of roughly 200 words per minute for silent reading, and about 130 words per minute for reading aloud. Those are the rates most “X min read” labels on blogs and news sites use, so your estimate matches reader expectations.

Reading vs speaking time

People read silently far faster than they speak. That gap matters if you are writing a speech, a podcast intro, or a video script: the speaking-time estimate tells you whether your three-minute slot is really three minutes of words, not just three minutes of silent reading.

Why show reading time at all

A visible “5 min read” sets expectations and increases the chance someone starts — and finishes — your article. Sizing the piece before you publish lets you trim or expand to hit the length your audience expects.

What reading speed does it use?

About 200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 for reading aloud — the averages most blogs and news sites use for their “X min read” labels.

Can I use it to time a speech?

Yes — use the speaking-time estimate, which is based on a typical out-loud pace, to check whether your script fits its time slot.

Is it accurate for everyone?

It is an average estimate; individual reading speeds vary. It’s a reliable planning guide, not an exact stopwatch for any single reader.

Is it free?

Yes — free, unlimited, no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser.

Do I need an account?

No. There’s no sign-up and no install — open the page and start typing.
