Terms of Service

1. Acceptance

These Terms of Service ("Terms") form a binding agreement between you and Humanit ("Humanit", "we", "us", or "our") covering your use of the website and web application at https://humanit.app, the Humanit browser extension, and any related APIs (together, "the Service"). By using the Service or creating an account, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are between 13 and the age of majority where you live, you may use it only with the involvement of a parent or guardian who accepts these Terms on your behalf.

The AI detector works without an account. The humanizer, paraphraser, summarizer, and grammar tools require a free account, created with an email address and password or through "Continue with Google".

You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for everything that happens under your account. One account is for one person; do not share, resell, or transfer it. Tell us immediately if you suspect unauthorised use.

3. What the Service is

Humanit uses generative AI, currently Google's Gemini models, to:

• Humanize — rewrite text so it reads more naturally and less machine-made.
• Detect — return a probabilistic estimate of how AI-written a passage reads, with a score and flagged phrases.
• Paraphrase — reword text while preserving meaning.
• Summarize — condense longer text at varying lengths.
• Grammar — correct spelling, punctuation, and fluency.

Some styles and features, including "Match my style", are available only on paid plans. Which features are paid, and the word allowances attached to each plan, are shown on our pricing page and may change over time.

4. Free tier and word balances

Every account receives 300 free words per month, resetting on the monthly anniversary of your sign-up date. Unused free words do not carry over. The AI detector is free, unmetered, and does not consume words.

Purchased words are added to a separate balance. Free words are spent before purchased words. Word balances have no cash value, cannot be exchanged for money, and cannot be transferred between accounts.

We may apply reasonable technical limits — such as a maximum length per request, a rate limit, or a fair-use cap — to keep the Service available for everyone.

5. Plans, packs, and billing

Purchases are processed by Dodo Payments, acting as merchant of record. Your payment details are handled by Dodo and never reach our servers.

• Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period at the then-current price, until you cancel. Cancel at any time from your account; access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for.
• One-time word packs are charged once. Purchased words do not expire, subject to these Terms and to your account remaining open.
• Pricing and taxes. Current prices are shown on the pricing page at the time of purchase. Prices are in US dollars unless stated otherwise, and applicable taxes may be added at checkout.
• Price changes. We may change prices. Changes never affect a billing period you have already paid for, and we will give notice before a renewal at a new price.
• Failed payments. If a renewal fails, paid features may be suspended until payment succeeds.

6. Refunds

This is why every tool is free to try before you pay: you get 300 free words a month and an unlimited free AI detector, so you can evaluate the quality on your own text before spending anything. Please use them.

Nothing here removes rights you have under mandatory consumer law in your country that cannot be waived by agreement. Where such a right applies, we will honour it.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Submit text you do not have the right to process, including material that infringes someone else's copyright, trade secret, or other rights.
• Generate or distribute content that is illegal, defamatory, fraudulent, harassing, hateful, sexually explicit involving minors, or that incites violence.
• Use the Service to commit academic fraud, deceive an employer or client about authorship, evade a legally required AI disclosure, or impersonate another person.
• Share, resell, or sublicense your account, your word balance, or access to our API.
• Attempt to circumvent word metering, paywalls, or feature gating, or to manipulate your subscription status.
• Scrape, crawl, or use bots or automated systems against the Service outside a documented API we have granted you.
• Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract our source code or prompt engineering, except where applicable law expressly permits it.
• Probe, overload, or interfere with the Service or the infrastructure it runs on, or attempt to access another user's account or data.

We may suspend or terminate accounts we reasonably believe have breached this section, without refund.

8. Responsible use of output

Humanit is not a substitute for original thinking, factual research, professional editing, or legal advice. Output is generated by a large language model and can be inaccurate, fabricated, biased, or stylistically wrong. Review every output before you rely on it, share it, or publish it.

You are responsible for understanding and following any rules that apply to AI-assisted writing in your context — your institution's academic integrity policy, your employer's compliance policy, a publisher's disclosure requirements, a platform's terms, journalistic standards, and applicable law. Using Humanit does not exempt you from any of them, and we make no representation that any particular use is permitted in your context.

9. About AI detection

The detector returns a probabilistic estimate, not a forensic determination. AI detection is an unsolved problem across the whole industry: false positives and false negatives happen, and human-written text is sometimes flagged.

We do not guarantee that our verdict matches what any third-party detector would return for the same text, and we make no promise that text processed with Humanit will or will not be flagged by any specific tool. Do not use a Humanit verdict to make accusations or grading decisions about another person's work.

10. Your content

You keep all rights to the text you submit ("Your Content"). You grant us a limited, worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to process Your Content solely to deliver the feature you requested and to store your run history so your account page works. This licence ends when you delete the relevant history entry or your account.

We do not use Your Content to train any AI model. Our handling of Your Content — including what is stored, for how long, and how to delete it — is set out in the Privacy Policy.

You are responsible for keeping your own copies of anything important. We are not a backup service, history is pruned automatically, and we are not liable for deleted or lost content.

11. Intellectual property

The Service — including its source code, design, copy, logos, and prompt engineering — is owned by Humanit and protected by intellectual property law. You receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service under these Terms. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, lease, sublicense, or create derivative works from it.

As between you and us, you own the output generated from Your Content, subject to your compliance with these Terms. Note that identical or similar output may be generated for other users, and that AI-generated material may not be copyrightable in your jurisdiction.

12. Third-party services

The Service depends on third parties including Google (Gemini API and Sign in with Google), Supabase, Dodo Payments, PostHog, Resend, and Vercel. Your use of the Service is also subject to their terms. We are not responsible for their acts, omissions, availability, or policies.

13. Availability and changes

We aim to keep the Service available but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of it, including specific tools, models, styles, or plans. Where a change materially reduces what you have already paid for, we will provide a reasonable equivalent or credit.

The underlying AI models may change without notice as providers update them, which can change the character of the output.

14. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE, THAT DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED, OR THAT ANY OUTPUT OR DETECTION VERDICT WILL BE ACCURATE, RELIABLE, OR APPROPRIATE FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR INSTITUTION.

15. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, HUMANIT AND ITS SUPPLIERS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES — INCLUDING LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, GOODWILL, OR ACADEMIC OR PROFESSIONAL STANDING — ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE SERVICE OR ANY AI-GENERATED OUTPUT, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY.

OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR (B) FIFTY US DOLLARS ($50.00).

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations. Where that is the case, these limits apply only to the maximum extent permitted by law, and nothing here excludes liability for fraud, death, or personal injury caused by negligence.

16. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Humanit and its officers, employees, and agents against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from: your use or misuse of the Service; your breach of these Terms; your violation of any third-party right; any content you submit; or any consequence of your use of AI-generated output in an academic, professional, or commercial setting.

17. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time, cancel a subscription from your account, and ask us to delete your account.

We may suspend or terminate your access, with or without notice, if we reasonably believe you have breached these Terms. On termination for breach, unused word balances and any remaining subscription period are forfeited without refund. Sections 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 14 through 18 survive termination.

18. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Humanit is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.

Please contact us first — nearly everything is resolved informally. If a dispute cannot be resolved that way, you and we agree it will be settled by binding individual arbitration, except that either party may bring qualifying claims in small-claims court. You and we agree that any proceeding will be conducted on an individual basis and not as a class, consolidated, or representative action, and each waive any right to a jury trial where a claim proceeds in court.

Nothing here prevents either party from seeking injunctive relief from a competent court to prevent infringement or misuse of intellectual property. If you are a consumer in the EEA or UK, this section does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory local law or of your right to bring proceedings in your local courts.

19. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms. The current version always lives at https://humanit.app/terms with the "Last updated" date above. For material changes we will show a notice in the app or email you. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept it; if you do not agree, stop using the Service and cancel any subscription.
