What an AI checker actually checks
No checker can see who typed a text. What it can measure is how the text is written: how predictable each word is (perplexity), how uniform the sentence lengths are (burstiness), and how much stock AI phrasing and rigid structure it carries. Language models leave those statistical fingerprints; human writing is usually messier. Every AI checker on the market — free or paid — is scoring some version of those signals and converting them into a probability.
What the "AI percentage" really means (it differs by tool)
The most common misreading is "80% AI means 80% of my text was AI-written." In most tools it does not. GPTZero's own documentation says its percentage is the probability the whole document is AI-written — not a proportion. Originality.ai's docs say the same: "60% Original / 40% AI" means the model leans human with 60% confidence, not that 40% of your words were generated. Turnitin uses the opposite convention: its number is the share of the submission its model flagged as AI — and because low scores produced too many false positives, Turnitin hides scores from 1–19% entirely, showing an asterisk instead. Same number, three meanings — which is why scores are not comparable across tools.
How accurate are AI checkers, really?
Less than the marketing suggests. OpenAI built its own AI-text classifier and shut it down in July 2023 for "low rate of accuracy" — by its own published numbers it caught just 26% of AI-written text while flagging human writing 9% of the time. A peer-reviewed 2023 Stanford study in Patterns found seven widely-used detectors misclassified over 61% of essays by non-native English speakers as AI-generated. A 14-tool academic test the same year concluded detectors are "neither accurate nor reliable", and a 2024 follow-up measured average accuracy at 39.5%, falling to 17.4% once the AI text was lightly edited. None of this means checkers are useless — raw, unedited AI text is genuinely easy to flag — but a score is evidence to weigh, never a verdict.

Frequently asked questions
What does "80% AI" actually mean?
It depends on the tool. In GPTZero and Originality.ai it is a confidence/probability about the whole text; in Turnitin it is the share of the submission flagged as AI. It almost never means "80% of the words were AI-written" — check the vendor's own docs before acting on a number.
Can an AI checker be wrong?
Yes, in both directions.
