Turnitin reports a similarity score and, separately, an AI writing indicator. They measure completely different things and a high number in one says nothing about the other. Similarity is a matching problem: it compares your text against a database of published work, web pages and previously submitted papers, and reports how much overlaps. AI detection is a statistical problem: it compares nothing, because no database of AI output exists — it estimates from the writing itself whether the patterns look machine-generated. Reorder a paragraph so it does not open with its topic sentence. These are also, not coincidentally, the things that make writing better.
What does not work, and what gets people caught
Synonym spinners make text worse and detectors still flag it, because swapping words leaves the sentence rhythm intact — the thing actually being measured. Running a draft through a paraphraser is the same story; QuillBot's own paraphraser does not reliably beat QuillBot's own detector. Then there are the tricks that turn a detection problem into a misconduct problem: white or zero-width characters hidden between words, invisible text sized to nothing, prompt-injection lines like "ignore previous instructions" buried in the document.
