Originality.ai AI Detector: Review & Free Check
Paste any text below for a free AI score, no account needed. This is Humanit's checker, not Originality.ai. Under it: who Originality.ai is built for, what its score means, and what it costs.
Originality.ai is an AI and plagiarism detector aimed mainly at publishers, agencies and SEO teams. It offers 3 free scans a day of up to 2,000 words, then credit-based plans where 1 credit covers 100 words. Its score is the model's confidence that a text is AI or human, not the share of the text that was AI-written.
Works with every major AI model
How it works
- 1Paste your text. Drop in the writing you want to check against Originality.ai-style detection.
- 2Run the free detector. Humanit returns a 0–100 AI-likelihood score, a verdict, and the signals behind it.
- 3See what reads as AI. The subscores show which patterns — predictable phrasing, uniform rhythm, stock vocabulary — are pulling the score up.
- 4Fix it if needed. If it reads as AI, send it to the humanizer to rewrite those signals, then re-check.
Who Originality.ai is built for
Most AI detectors are aimed at students and teachers. Originality.ai is aimed at people who buy and publish writing: content agencies, SEO teams and publishers checking freelancers' work. Its paid plans include full-site scans — enter a URL and it checks the site — plus scan tagging, team seats and a year of scan history on the larger plan. It pairs AI detection with plagiarism checking, and it is known as one of the stricter detectors, tuned for web content.
What the score actually means
Originality.ai's headline figure is a confidence score, not a proportion. Its own documentation explains that a result such as 60% Original and 40% AI means the model leans towards human with 60% confidence — not that 40% of the words were generated. That is the opposite convention to Turnitin and Grammarly, which report the share of the text flagged, so an Originality.ai number cannot be compared with theirs. For a publisher deciding whether to trust a freelancer, the useful reading is the direction and strength of the call across a whole article, plus which passages it highlights.
Free tier and credit pricing
Originality.ai's free tier allows 3 scans a day of up to 2,000 words each. Paid use is metered in credits, where 1 credit covers 100 words: the Pro plan is $12.95 a month for 2,000 credits, roughly 200,000 words, and the larger plan is $136.58 a month for 15,000 credits. Credits expire after a month and renew with the plan, so unused capacity does not roll over, and extra credits can be bought on top.
How accurate is Originality.ai?
Originality.ai calls itself the most accurate AI detector in third-party studies and points to peer-reviewed research and its own accuracy study. Those are real studies of real test sets, and they still describe those test sets rather than your text. Independent research on detectors as a class finds that accuracy drops on edited AI text and on formal or non-native English writing — a 2023 study in Patterns found more than 61% of genuine TOEFL essays by non-native speakers misclassified as AI across the detectors it tested. A strict detector catches more AI text and, by the same token, flags more careful human writing; for publishers that trade-off is often acceptable, for an individual writer it is worth knowing.
If Originality.ai flags your writing
If you write for a client who runs Originality.ai, the practical fixes are the ones that improve writing anyway: vary sentence length, cut stock transitions and generic claims, and add specific detail, examples and first-hand observations. Keep drafts and version history as evidence of your process. Because the score is a confidence, a borderline result on your own writing is a reason to talk to the client, not proof of anything.
A free second opinion
Humanit's detector above is free with no account for up to 300 words per check — a smaller free limit than Originality.ai's, to be clear. What it adds is a breakdown: a 0–100 score split into sub-signals like perplexity, burstiness, AI vocabulary and structure, the exact phrases pulling the score up, and a humanizer on the same page if something needs reworking.

Frequently asked questions
Is Originality.ai free?
Partly. The free tier allows 3 scans a day of up to 2,000 words each. Regular use is on paid credit plans starting at $12.95 a month.
How much does Originality.ai cost?
The Pro plan is $12.95 a month for 2,000 credits, and 1 credit covers 100 words. The larger plan is $136.58 a month for 15,000 credits. Credits expire monthly and renew with the plan.
Is Originality.ai accurate?
It describes itself as the most accurate detector in third-party studies. Independent research on detectors in general finds real false positives, especially on formal and non-native English writing, so treat any single score as a signal.
What does 60% Original mean on Originality.ai?
It means the model is 60% confident the text is human-written. It is not a claim that 40% of the words were AI-generated.
Who uses Originality.ai?
Mostly publishers, content agencies and SEO teams checking writers' work, which is why it offers full-site scans and team seats.
Will my text be used to train AI?
No. Your text is sent to the model only to produce your result and is never used to train any AI. No content is stored beyond the request.
Does it keep my original meaning?
Yes. Humanit preserves your facts, numbers, names, and citations while changing the phrasing and structure. It never invents new claims.
