## How syllables are counted

Every syllable centers on a vowel sound, so the counter finds runs of vowels in each word, discounts silent endings like the “e” in “make”, and treats “y” as a vowel when it sounds like one (“rhythm”, “fly”). This vowel-group method matches dictionary counts for the vast majority of English words — but English being English, a handful of words genuinely vary by speaker and dialect, which is why the per-word breakdown shows you exactly how each word was scored.

## Counting syllables for haiku and poetry

A haiku is three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables — seventeen in all — and sonnets, limericks, and song verses carry their own counts per line.
