# Humanize a Word Document

> To humanize a Word document, import the .docx, rewrite it section by section, then paste each section back using Merge Formatting and review the changes with Track Changes. Humanit keeps facts and citations intact and returns text, not a new .docx.

Import a .docx, rewrite its AI-sounding sections so they read like you, and paste them back into Word without breaking your styles or your citations. The file is read in your browser, never uploaded.

## Quick facts

- **Files:** Word .docx. ODT, RTF, PDF, TXT and photos work too; old .doc does not.
- **Is the file uploaded?:** No. The file is unpacked inside your browser; only its text goes into the editor.
- **Words per run:** 1,000 words a run in your first month, then 300. Paid plans: Starter 1,200, Pro 2,500, Ultra 6,000.
- **Scanned pages:** Read with OCR on a free account: 10 pages a day, 100 on paid plans.
- **File limits:** 20 MB per file, up to 30 pages or photos at once.
- **Cost:** Free account: 1,000 words in the first month, then 300 a month. No card.
- **What you get back:** Rewritten text to paste into Word, not a new .docx.

## How it works

1. **Import the .docx** — Drop it on the box. Body text and tables come in; comments and footnotes stay in Word.
2. **Rewrite one heading at a time** — Keep what you are not changing out of the editor. A free account rewrites 1,000 words a run in its first month, then 300.
3. **Turn on Track Changes, then paste** — In Word, Review then Track Changes, and paste with Merge Formatting so your styles survive.
4. **Review and check** — Accept the changes you agree with, then run the final text through the detector.

## The fastest way to humanize a whole .docx

Import the file rather than copying from Word. Copying drags hidden baggage along (comment anchors, field codes, a stray header), while the importer reads just the body: every paragraph and heading, plus the text in tables. Then work through the document heading by heading. Delete everything in the editor except the section you are rewriting, run it, take the result back to Word and move on. It sounds slower than one giant paste. It is not, because you review each section once instead of hunting through twenty pages afterwards for the sentence that changed meaning.

## Paste back without wrecking your styles

Humanit returns text, not a .docx, so how you paste decides whether your formatting survives. Word offers three paste options. Keep Source Formatting brings the look of wherever you copied from; Merge Formatting adopts the formatting around the cursor, so the paragraph takes on your document's body style; Keep Text Only strips everything. Merge Formatting is usually right for rewritten prose. If the section has headings, bold or lists you want to keep, switch on Rich text before you run, so the output carries that structure instead of flattening it.

## See every change with Track Changes or Compare

Word already has the best review tool for this job. Before you paste a rewritten section, turn on Track Changes (Review, then Track Changes). Every word the rewrite altered then shows up as a marked change you can accept or reject one at a time, which is the quickest way to catch a sentence that drifted from what you meant. If you have already pasted everything, Review, then Compare, then Compare Documents lines up your original and new files and marks the differences. Either way, nothing gets into your final version without you seeing it.

## Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote citations

Reference managers insert citations as Word fields: the visible "(Smith, 2021)" is the field's display text, with a hidden code underneath that keeps your bibliography in sync. The importer reads the visible text, and Humanit carries citations through a rewrite unchanged. But once rewritten text is pasted over a field, the field becomes plain text and your reference manager loses track of it. Two ways around that: rewrite the prose between citations and leave the cited sentences alone, or re-insert the citations with your reference manager after pasting. Do it before you refresh the bibliography, not after.

## What to keep out of the rewrite

Direct quotations must stay word for word, so keep them out. The same goes for your reference list, defined terms in a contract or policy, survey questions and anything copied from a legal or regulatory source. Tables of data do not need humanizing either; they come in one cell per line, which is a hint to delete them from the editor. Humanit preserves facts, numbers and names, but the cleaner your input, the more of the rewrite goes into the sentences that actually read as machine-written.

## Check the version you will hand in

When every section is back in Word and every change accepted, run the final text through the [Word document AI detector](https://humanit.app/detect/word-document). It is the assembled document that gets read and scored, not the sections you checked on the way. And whether AI assistance is allowed at all is your institution's or employer's call, so read the brief and keep your earlier drafts. A version history that shows how the document developed is worth more than any score.

## Who it’s for

- **Students** — Rework AI-assisted sections of an essay or report without losing citations.
- **Consultants** — Make a templated, machine-drafted report read like your firm wrote it.
- **HR and comms teams** — Rewrite policy drafts and announcements in a human voice.
- **Grant writers** — Tighten AI-drafted narrative sections while keeping the required wording.

**What comes through when you import a Word document**

| In your Word file | What the import does | Before you rewrite it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Paragraphs and headings | Imported with every paragraph break exactly as written. | Rewrite this, one heading at a time. |
| Tables | Each cell comes in as its own short paragraph. | Delete data tables from the editor; they do not need humanizing. |
| Tracked changes | Deleted text is dropped and inserted text kept: the document as if every change were accepted. | Accept or reject pending changes first. |
| Comments | Not imported. | Nothing to do. They stay in Word. |
| Citation fields (Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote) and tables of contents | The visible text is imported; the field code behind it is not. | Rewrite around citation fields, or re-insert them after pasting. |
| Equations and images | Skipped. | Nothing to do. They stay in Word. |
| Older .doc files (Word 97–2003) | Not supported. Save as .docx and import that. | Save as .docx first. |

**Word's paste options, and when to use each**

| Paste option | What it does | Use it when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Merge Formatting | Takes on the style of the paragraph you paste into | Pasting rewritten body text (most of the time) |
| Keep Text Only | Strips all formatting | Your document has strict styles you will reapply |
| Keep Source Formatting | Keeps the formatting it was copied with | Pasting Rich text output with headings and lists |

**How much of a document one run rewrites**

| Plan | Words rewritten at once | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free account, first month | 1,000 words | about 2 pages | about 4 pages |
| Free account, after that | 300 words | under a page | about 1 page |
| Starter | 1,200 words | about 2.5 pages | about 5 pages |
| Pro | 2,500 words | about 5 pages | about 10 pages |
| Ultra | 6,000 words | about 12 pages | about 24 pages |

## FAQ

**Can I upload a Word document to the AI humanizer?**

Yes. Import the .docx and its text appears in the editor. The file is unpacked inside your browser and never uploaded.

**Will I get a humanized .docx back?**

No. You get rewritten text. Paste it back into your document with Merge Formatting, or use Rich text output to keep headings and lists.

**Will it keep my formatting?**

Your Word file is never changed, so its formatting is safe. Pasted text takes on your document's styles when you use Merge Formatting, and Rich text output keeps headings, bold and lists.

**Does it keep my Zotero or Mendeley citations?**

The citation text is kept, but pasting over a citation field turns it into plain text. Rewrite around the cited sentences or re-insert the citations afterwards.

**What happens to comments and tracked changes?**

Comments are not imported. Tracked changes are read as accepted. Settle them in Word before importing so the rewrite starts from your current version.

**Can I humanize a whole 5,000-word document at once?**

Only on Ultra, which rewrites up to 6,000 words a run. Other plans work in sections, which is better for review anyway.

**Is my document stored?**

The file is never uploaded. The text you rewrite is sent to produce the result, is not used to train AI models, and appears in your account history until you delete it.
