# Humanize a PDF

> To humanize a PDF, import it, remove the parts that must not change (quotes, references), rewrite the rest in sections and paste the result back into the source document. Humanit reads the PDF in your browser and returns plain text, not a new PDF.

Import a PDF, rewrite its AI-sounding passages into natural writing that keeps your meaning, and check the new version before it goes anywhere. The file is read in your browser, never uploaded.

## Quick facts

- **Files:** PDF, text-based or scanned. Word, ODT, RTF, TXT and photos work too.
- **Is the file uploaded?:** No. The PDF is opened inside your browser; only its text goes into the editor.
- **Words per run:** 1,000 words a run in your first month, then 300. Paid plans: Starter 1,200, Pro 2,500, Ultra 6,000.
- **Scanned pages:** Read with OCR on a free account: 10 pages a day, 100 on paid plans.
- **File limits:** 20 MB per file, up to 30 pages or photos at once.
- **Cost:** Free account: 1,000 words in the first month, then 300 a month. No card.
- **What you get back:** Rewritten text to paste into your document, not a new PDF.

## How it works

1. **Import the PDF** — Drop it on the box. The text appears in the editor so you can see exactly what will be rewritten.
2. **Take out what must stay word for word** — Direct quotations, the reference list, legal wording and data tables. Paste them back afterwards.
3. **Humanize one section at a time** — A free account rewrites 1,000 words a run in its first month, then 300. Paid plans run up to 6,000.
4. **Put it back and check it** — Paste the result into your Word or Docs source, re-export the PDF and run the detector on the final text.

## A PDF is where writing ends up, not where you edit it

PDF is a print format. It fixes every line to a position on a page, which is why nobody edits essays in one. That shapes how humanizing a PDF works: Humanit takes the text out, rewrites it and gives you plain text back, and the place that text belongs is the document the PDF was made from. If you still have the Word or Google Docs original, rewrite from there and export a fresh PDF at the end. If the PDF is all you have, an AI draft someone sent you or a file you downloaded, import it here, rewrite it and paste the result into a new document.

## Look at the imported text before you rewrite it

The importer cleans up the usual PDF mess. Lines wrapped at the page edge are joined back into paragraphs, words split by a hyphen at a line end are healed, and lone page numbers disappear. Two things it deliberately leaves alone: running headers, which repeat on every page, and footnotes, which land between paragraphs where they sat on the page. Delete both before you run anything. A humanizer treats whatever it is given as prose, so a header caught in the middle of a paragraph can get woven into a sentence.

## Keep quotations and references out of the rewrite

A direct quotation has to stay exactly as the source wrote it, and a reference list has to stay exactly as your citation style requires. Neither should go through a humanizer. Humanit is built to carry facts, numbers, names and in-text citations through unchanged, but the safe workflow is not to test that on the parts where a single changed word is a real problem. Cut block quotes and the bibliography out of the editor first, humanize the prose around them, and paste them back in when you reassemble the document.

## Work in sections that fit your plan

Each run has a word ceiling: 1,000 words in a free account's first month, 300 after that, and Starter 1,200, Pro 2,500, Ultra 6,000 on the paid plans. When an imported PDF is longer than your ceiling, the importer says so and offers to keep the first part, ending on a full sentence. Sections are the better unit anyway. A coherent section of five hundred to two thousand words gives the rewrite enough context to keep your argument flowing, and it is a size you can actually read carefully before moving on. The table below turns those limits into pages.

## Getting the result back into a PDF

Copy the rewritten section and paste it over the original in your source document. If you want headings, bold and lists preserved, switch on Rich text before you run; the output then carries that formatting in a form most editors accept on paste. When every section is done, export the PDF again and look at the page count, since rewritten text rarely runs to the same length (the [words to pages calculator](https://humanit.app/tools/words-to-pages) helps if you are working to a limit). Then run the final text through the [PDF AI detector](https://humanit.app/detect/pdf), because the version you submit is the one that matters.

## Where the line is

Rewriting your own draft into clearer, more natural phrasing is editing. Whether AI assistance was allowed in the first place is set by your school, publisher or employer, not by any tool, and policies range from "disclose it" to "not at all". Read the brief before you rely on a humanizer, and keep your drafts. No humanizer can promise a clean result on every detector and every version, which is why the check at the end is part of the process rather than an extra.

## Who it’s for

- **Students** — Rework an AI-drafted essay or report that only exists as a PDF.
- **Researchers** — Smooth the stiff, AI-assisted passages in a preprint draft before submission.
- **Marketers** — Turn a machine-written whitepaper or e-book into copy that sounds like your brand.
- **Job seekers** — Rewrite a resume or cover letter PDF that reads like a template.

**What comes through when you import a PDF**

| In your PDF | What the import does | Before you rewrite it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Text on ordinary pages | Read in your browser. Lines that wrap at the page edge are re-joined into whole paragraphs. | This is what you want rewritten. |
| Words split at a line end ("assess-" / "ment") | Healed back into one word. | Nothing to do. |
| Running headers and footers | Kept as text, once for every page they appear on. | Delete them so they are not woven into a paragraph. |
| Footnotes | Imported where they sit on the page, usually between paragraphs. | Move them out; rewrite or keep them separately. |
| Reference list or bibliography | Imported like any other text. | Cut it out entirely and paste it back after. |
| Images, charts and figures | Skipped. Captions are text, so they come through. | Rewrite captions separately if at all. |
| Scanned pages with no selectable text | Read with OCR. Needs a free account; 10 scan pages a day free, 100 on paid plans. | Sign in so these pages can be read. |
| Two-column layouts | Read in the order the PDF stores its text, which is usually column by column. | Check that paragraphs follow in the right order. |
| More than 30 pages | The first 30 pages are read and the import tells you how many were skipped. | Rewrite in sections; the import offers to keep the first part. |

**How much of a PDF one run rewrites**

| Plan | Words rewritten at once | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free account, first month | 1,000 words | about 2 pages | about 4 pages |
| Free account, after that | 300 words | under a page | about 1 page |
| Starter | 1,200 words | about 2.5 pages | about 5 pages |
| Pro | 2,500 words | about 5 pages | about 10 pages |
| Ultra | 6,000 words | about 12 pages | about 24 pages |

## FAQ

**Can I upload a PDF to the AI humanizer?**

Yes. Drop the PDF on the editor or choose Import a PDF. It is read inside your browser rather than uploaded, and its text appears in the editor ready to rewrite.

**Will I get a humanized PDF back?**

No. You get rewritten plain text, or formatted text with Rich text switched on. Paste it into your Word or Google Docs source and export a new PDF from there.

**Does it keep my citations and quotes?**

In-text citations, facts, numbers and names are carried through unchanged. Take direct quotations and the reference list out before you run it anyway, since those must stay word for word.

**Can it humanize a scanned PDF?**

Yes. Scanned pages are read with OCR on a free account, 10 pages a day free. Proofread the recognized text before rewriting it, because a misread word gets rewritten too.

**How many pages can I humanize at once?**

It depends on your plan's words per run: 300 words on a free account after the first month (1,000 during it), up to 6,000 on Ultra. At about 500 words per single-spaced page, 6,000 words is roughly twelve pages.

**Is my PDF stored anywhere?**

The file is never uploaded. The text you choose to rewrite is sent to produce the result, is not used to train AI models, and appears in your account history, where you can delete it.

**Will the humanized PDF pass Turnitin?**

Humanizing changes the patterns detectors score, which usually lowers an AI score, but no tool can promise a result on every detector. Check the final text with the free detector and follow your institution's rules on AI use.

- **Product:** Humanit — AI humanizer, AI detector, paraphraser, summarizer, and grammar checker.
- **Free tier:** The AI detector is free with no account for up to 300 words and never spends words; signed in, it checks up to 1,500 words at a time. The other four tools need a free account: 1,000 free words in the account's first month (up to 1,000 words per run), then 300 free words every month (up to 300 words per run), resetting on the signup date. No card required.
- **Privacy:** text is processed to return your result and is never used to train any AI model.
- **Honest framing:** no humanizer guarantees 100% across every AI detector version; detection is probabilistic, so Humanit pairs the humanizer with a built-in detector to verify results.
