# Free AI Checker: Score Any Text — and Know What the Score Means

> An AI checker estimates how likely text is machine-written. Humanit's is free with no sign-up and returns a 0–100 score with sub-signals — an estimate to verify, never proof.

Paste any text below and get an AI-likelihood score from 0–100 with the signals behind it — completely free, no account. Then read on: the "AI percentage" means something different in every tool, and knowing the difference matters.

## How it works

1. **Paste your text** — Drop in the writing you want to check against AI Checker-style detection.
2. **Run the free detector** — Humanit returns a 0–100 AI-likelihood score, a verdict, and the signals behind it.
3. **See what reads as AI** — The subscores show which patterns — predictable phrasing, uniform rhythm, stock vocabulary — are pulling the score up.
4. **Fix it if needed** — If it reads as AI, send it to the humanizer to rewrite those signals, then re-check.

## What an AI checker actually checks

No checker can see who typed a text. What it can measure is how the text is written: how predictable each word is (perplexity), how uniform the sentence lengths are (burstiness), and how much stock AI phrasing and rigid structure it carries. Language models leave those statistical fingerprints; human writing is usually messier. Every AI checker on the market — free or paid — is scoring some version of those signals and converting them into a probability.

## What the "AI percentage" really means (it differs by tool)

The most common misreading is "80% AI means 80% of my text was AI-written." In most tools it does not. GPTZero's own documentation says its percentage is the probability the whole document is AI-written — not a proportion. Originality.ai's docs say the same: "60% Original / 40% AI" means the model leans human with 60% confidence, not that 40% of your words were generated. Turnitin uses the opposite convention: its number is the share of the submission its model flagged as AI — and because low scores produced too many false positives, Turnitin hides scores from 1–19% entirely, showing an asterisk instead. Same number, three meanings — which is why scores are not comparable across tools.

## How accurate are AI checkers, really?

Less than the marketing suggests. OpenAI built its own AI-text classifier and shut it down in July 2023 for "low rate of accuracy" — by its own published numbers it caught just 26% of AI-written text while flagging human writing 9% of the time. A peer-reviewed 2023 Stanford study in Patterns found seven widely-used detectors misclassified over 61% of essays by non-native English speakers as AI-generated. A 14-tool academic test the same year concluded detectors are "neither accurate nor reliable", and a 2024 follow-up measured average accuracy at 39.5%, falling to 17.4% once the AI text was lightly edited. None of this means checkers are useless — raw, unedited AI text is genuinely easy to flag — but a score is evidence to weigh, never a verdict.

## Why Humanit shows you the breakdown, not just a number

A bare percentage invites over-trust. Humanit's checker returns the 0–100 score plus ten sub-signals — perplexity, burstiness, AI vocabulary, discourse markers, structure, personal voice, and more — and lists the specific phrases that read most machine-written. You see why the score is what it is, which tells you exactly what to fix. It's completely free, with no sign-up and no word cost, as many checks as you need.

## If your writing gets flagged

First: false positives are real and documented — formal, formulaic, and non-native writing is flagged most. If the text is yours, vary your sentence lengths, cut stock transitions, and add specific detail, then re-check. If the draft is AI-assisted and that's allowed for your use, run it through the humanizer to rewrite the flagged signals and verify the result here. And whatever a checker says about someone else's writing, treat it as a reason to look closer — never as proof on its own.

## Who it’s for

- **Educators** — Get a second-opinion estimate — with false-positive caveats — before raising a concern.
- **Students** — Check your own work for AI-sounding passages before submitting.
- **SEO & content editors** — Screen drafts so published work reads human.
- **Writers** — Self-check AI-assisted drafts and fix what reads as machine-written.

**The same "AI score" means different things in different tools**

| Tool | What its number actually means |
| --- | --- |
| GPTZero | Probability the whole document is AI-written (their docs: not a proportion) |
| Turnitin | Share of the submission flagged as AI; scores 1–19% are hidden behind an asterisk |
| Originality.ai | Model confidence in its human-vs-AI call — not the share of AI text |
| Copyleaks | Per-passage probabilities aggregated into a document percentage |
| Humanit | 0–100 AI-likelihood + 10 sub-signals + the exact phrases that read as AI — free |

## FAQ

**What does "80% AI" actually mean?**

It depends on the tool. In GPTZero and Originality.ai it is a confidence/probability about the whole text; in Turnitin it is the share of the submission flagged as AI. It almost never means "80% of the words were AI-written" — check the vendor's own docs before acting on a number.

**Can an AI checker be wrong?**

Yes, in both directions. GPTZero famously rated the US Constitution as likely AI-generated, ZeroGPT scored the Declaration of Independence about 98% AI, and OpenAI's educator FAQ admits its own experimental detector flagged Shakespeare. Edited AI text also slips through routinely. Scores are signals, not verdicts.

**Is this AI checker free?**

Yes — completely free, no account needed, and it never costs words. Check as often as you like; the humanizer and other writing tools are what use your free monthly words.

**Is an "AI checker" different from an "AI detector"?**

No — same tool, different name. "Checker", "detector", "scanner", and "AI score" all describe software that estimates how likely a text is machine-written from its statistical patterns.

**Why does my own writing get flagged as AI?**

Clean, formal, or formulaic writing looks statistically similar to AI output — and a 2023 Stanford study found non-native English writing is flagged worst, with over 61% of real TOEFL essays misclassified. Varying sentence rhythm and adding concrete, specific detail usually lowers the score.

**Which AI checker is the most accurate?**

No independent test crowns a reliably-best tool, and vendor accuracy claims are measured on the vendor's own test sets. The practical approach: use a checker that shows its reasoning, check twice after edits, and never rely on a single score.

- **Free tier:** the AI detector is completely free with no account; the other tools need a free account with 300 free words every month (resetting monthly on the signup date).
- **Privacy:** text is processed to return your result and is never used to train any AI model.
- **Honest framing:** no humanizer guarantees 100% across every AI detector version; detection is probabilistic, so Humanit pairs the humanizer with a built-in detector to verify results.
